That’s right, the Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown, a mind-blowing experimental studio project featuring George Clinton, has scheduled three live concert dates beginning with the famed Long Beach Funk Festival on August 20th, followed by a gig at the legendary Whisky A Go-Go on August 23.  A show at famous Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz on August 26 rounds out the dates.  Be prepared for a scorchin’ sweaty set of funk delivered by a stellar line-up that includes members of Kool and the Gang, Graham Central Station, P Funk, and special guests.  The show debuts music from the band’s premiere CD Volume 1 available on iTunes August 16 on the Getdown Entertainment Imprint.  Two singles from Volume 1 are already making noise including “Room 2012″ and “College Funk,” which was nominated for a Hollywood Music and Media Award for Best Funk / Groove Song.

The Big Ol’Nasty Getdown Volume 1 is one hot collection sure to blow your mind.   Rarely has a record captured the true free spirit of the genre, a pure jamfest where ideas, good vibes, and an anything goes attitude flowed freely through the recording sessions, from New Orleans to George Clinton’s studio in Tallahassee.   With 60-plus musicians and singers pledging allegiance to The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown, this is more than a labor of love for all involved…it’s the ultimate party and a chance to pass it on.  Three years in the making with a stellar line-up of some of the genre’s biggest icons (George Clinton, Garry “Star Child” Shider, Belita Woods, Sidney Barnes, Michael “Clip” Payne) and introducing newcomers Rev. Desmond D’Angelo and Laura Reed,  the eleven tracks featured on  Volume 1  are pure authentic funk.

The songs were written in the recording studio as part of a giant jam session with everyone contributing to the songwriting process.  It was this atmosphere that inspired George Clinton and Sidney Barnes to finally finish a song they started some 30 years ago, “The Beauty of Pretty,” which appears for the first time on the record.  Volume 1 also features some of the final recordings of the late Garry “Star Child” Shider, who was an influential force behind the project.   The legends and the newcomers meshed their essence together to concoct a magical potion of funk that pays homage to the past while speeding toward the future, an experience so powerful it is sure to amplify the soul!

Stand out tracks on Volume 1 include the apocalyptic love song “Room 2012,” featuring Rev. Desmond D’Angelo; the steamy ballad “I Will Wait For You,” featuring Laura Reed;  the booty shaking instrumental “College Funk,” and the raucously raunchy “Include Me,”  featuring Belita Woods, P-Funk’s resident siren.   ”Amplify,” “It’s So Hard To Go,” “Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown,” ” The Beauty of Pretty,” “Away From The World,” “Platinum,” and “Wake Me Up,” round out the album.  Some of the artists who appear on the record include members of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Robert Mercurio (Galactic), steel guitarist Roosevelt Collier (Lee Boys), Danny Bedrosian (P-Funk), JP Miller ( Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band), Grammy Winner Kofi Burbridge (Derek Truck Band), Ian Neville (The Meters/Dumpstaphunk), Tyler Simmons, Sidney Barnes, and drummer Alvin Ford Jr.  The record was produced by John Heintz, Frank Mapstone, and John-Paul Miller.

With a project this special it is only fitting that famed artist Emek was chosen to create an album cover that captures the spirit of The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown.  “The first thing that popped into my cerebral corpus callosum was an image of a big ol’ nasty getdown,” says Emek. “A big ol’ 70′s style funky pimp voodoo Wiz tin man scrap-yard robot musician magician conjuring up a groovy robot party. It’s bright, colorful, and fun like the music.  I really enjoyed drawing this cover.”

The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is a funk all-star super group, the likes of which has never been seen before.  Whether on record or in concert, this is one experience not to be missed.  May the funk be with you!

College Funk shows the true collaborative effort behind The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown. Says Roosevelt (The Lee Boys) Collier who plays pedal steel for the band, “College Funk came about basically like a bunch of guys just sitting around in this room just chillin’ like some college kids. Actually that is where the name came from. Bassist Robert Mercurio said we sounded like a college band, so we called the song College Funk.”

“Recording with The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown truly lived up to its name. The band was BIG, the music was some NASTY FUNK, and the whole focus behind the project was to GET DOWN!” said bass player Robert (Galactic) Mercurio. “College Funk was a fun tune that came together quickly through the band improvising with each other in the studio and it felt right from the beginning.”

Cover art for the College Funk single created by Lex Gable, illustrates the band’s philosophy to keep it real and authentic from the art to the music. Produced by John Heintz, John-Paul Miller and Frank Mapstone, all eleven tracks featured on The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown’s debut album Volume 1 are pure funk gold that pays homage to the past while speeding toward the future. You can see behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the record at youtube.com/Getdown2012 channel.

The first single Room 2012 written by Greg Hollowell and The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown with lyrics and vocals by new funk vocal powerhouse Reverend Desmond D’Angelo is also available now on iTunes. The track features backing vocals by the Godfather of Funk himself George Clinton, Garry Shider, P-Funk siren Belita Woods, Funkadelic’s Sidney Barnes, newcomer Laura Reed and players from Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, The Dirty Dozen Brass Brand, to name a few. It is a modern day love song set against the backdrop of the mythical 2012 apocalypse.

The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown is a one-of-a-kind funkified outfit with over 60 players involved in the recordings and live shows. It’s a place where legends and newcomers join forces to explore, create, and invent musical works that will stand the test of time. George Clinton, the late Garry Shider, Belita Woods, Sidney Barnes, Michael “Clip” Payne, among others jammed with up and comers Rev. Desmond D’Angelo, Laura Reed, and John-Paul Miller. “It was so much fun playing on this album,” continues Collier. “We were up in the French Quarter in New Orleans in this big house for a whole week. It was all these people coming together, hangin’ out and becoming a family. We were writing and jamming and having fun. All this noise just out of nowhere. People writing music, composing music. It was an all out blast!”

The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown brings the party to Southern California when it headlines the Long Beach Funk Festival on August 20th as well as additional tour dates to be announced shortly. Whether on record on in concert, this is one experience not to be missed. May the funk be with you!

“Emek created a work of art that captured a glimpse of the future while incorporating flavors of the past to create something timeless which is what I feel we’ve done with The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown,” says producer and founder John Heintz.  “It’s real, it’s honest and it’s unexpected. It catches you off guard but leaves you with a smile on your face.  It’s a celebration scene from the future after having won the war against sitting still.”
