Five years ago today The Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown came to life in New Orleans when 35 musicians from 17 widely known bands gathered to record an experimental album. The album would in concept capture the energy and vibe that can only be found in a live setting yet write all new material on the spot letting everybody’s voice and style create the sound. George Clinton, Members of P-Funk, Dumpstaphunk, Galactic, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, the Warren Haynes Band, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, The Lee Boys, Derrick Trucks Band, The Soular System, SciFi, Singer Songwriters Ralph Rodenberry and Laura Reed, Motown legend Sidney Barnes and other great folks were all present . The majority of the players stayed together in a mansion in New Orleans’ French Quarter for the week of writing and recording. What happened during these sessions was truly Epic and the music kept on flowing beyond anything we could have hoped for. The album is packed with amazing art by famed artist Emek who did Erykah Badu’s cover among other recognizable images. We wanted bring back the experience of buying an album with all of the detail and imagery that you might have found back in the day. On a sad note, during the making of the record we lost two amazing friends/bandmates who were essential in the creation of this band and should forever be recognized. Garry “StarChild” Shider and Belita Woods gave there knowledge, their friendship, their talent and their hearts to the Big Ol’ Nasty Getdown which we will forever be grateful of. Fly On. On a positive note, prior to “Volume 1′s” release last week the album had received 2011 Funk Song of the Year at the Hollywood Music In Media Awards (HMMA’s) as well as a nomination for 2012 Album of the Year by the LA Music Awards and 2012 Country Song of the Year by the HMMA’s. Check it out for yourself and help support this entirely grass roots project.
